In the case of an ETC, they implement a points-based system in which charges will be deducted from the vehicle’s On-Board Unit (OBU) that was pre-installed.

Instructions

  1. Visit the nairobiexpressway(dot)ke.
  2. Select “Apply” under ETC and book OBU device installation.
  3. Visit the toll station.
  4. Open a new account and submit documentation such as a copy of your ID and logbook to verify vehicle ownership. Also, note that you can apply as an individual or company.
  5. The OBU is attached to the vehicle’s windscreen to enable infrared scanning while passing through a toll station. Drivers will also be required to pay a service charge of Ksh 1,000 for the ETC. The OBU is priced at Kshs 1,000 and requires a permit. However, motorists who load more than Kshs 5,000 will not be charged the Kshs 1,000 fee. The entire amount will go toward toll points.
  6. Load a minimum fee of Kshs 2,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points are deducted for each toll station?

It’s calculated after the distance traveled, so it’s reverted to cash during calculations. In the case of Westlands to Mlolongo, 300 points will be removed, approximately the money you’d have spent (Ksh300).

Is it possible to use ATM cards on the MTC lanes?

No, only MTC cards will be accepted, which are similar to ATM cards.

Is there an expiration date on the toll points? And, if they do expire, how long do they last?

Yes, the points are only good for one year.

Is it possible to transfer toll points from one motorist to another?

No, this is not possible because each vehicle is registered to a separate account.

What happens if you have more than one vehicle?

One account may be used to cover more than one automobile. After you’ve made an account, each car will have its own unique OBU. There is no limit to the number of vehicles that can be covered by a single account.

Keep in mind that the OBU must be physically registered, but it is not required that all vehicles are brought on the same day.

I am a taxi driver and don’t have the vehicle’s logbook, can I sign up for the ETC?

You will need to submit a copy of the logbook, a copy of the agreement between the driver and owner, and copies of both parties’ national identification documents. This is for evidence purposes, so it’s important to have paperwork.

Are Tuk Tuks, Boda Bodas, and Bicycles allowed?

Tuk-tuks, wheelbarrows, handcarts, scooters, and bicycles will not be permitted on the expressway. Pedestrians and skaters will also be prohibited from using the road.
