In a stunning disclosure to the court, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino presented a detailed account of his alleged financial support to DJ Evolve, real name Felix Orinda. Owino, currently on trial for misuse of a firearm, maintained that he has provided significant monetary aid to Orinda following the shooting incident that left the DJ seriously injured.
Babu Owino’s Spending So Far
According to Owino, his contributions included:
- The purchase of an apartment in the upscale Kilimani neighborhood, worth Ksh. 17 million, where DJ Evolve now resides. This was in addition to the Ksh. 23 million that Owino claimed to have spent on the DJ’s medical bills.
- The MP’s financial assistance didn’t stop there. Owino reported that he employs a team of healthcare professionals, including two nurses and physiotherapists, and an occupational therapist, with a monthly expense of Ksh. 300,000. He further said that he has allocated Ksh. 70,000 per month for Orinda’s daily expenses and an additional Ksh. 80,000 for his monthly medication. He claimed to have spent Ksh. 5.5 million over the past 37 months on these expenses.
- Furthermore, Owino announced his intentions to facilitate further medical treatment for DJ Evolve and to establish a DJ academy in his name, ostensibly to secure his future.
As for the events of the fateful night, Owino defended himself, stating that his firearm had jammed, leading him to argue that it could not have been the one that fired the bullet that injured DJ Evolve. He suggested that another firearm may have been involved, although he did not provide further details on this claim.
These statements, however, were met with criticism and disbelief from certain quarters. Miguna Miguna, a notable figure in Kenyan politics, expressed his skepticism and outrage on Twitter. He lambasted the Kenyan judicial system and government, stating that if Kenya upheld the Rule of Law, Babu Owino would be serving a jail term for his actions. He also criticized the fact that Owino was discussing how he spent public money on Evolve’s care, and alleged that the prosecutors who should have been ensuring justice were instead applauding Owino’s actions.
If Kenya was governed by the Rule of Law, Babu Owino would be serving at least 20 years in jail for attempted murder and grievous assault with a weapon causing bodily harm. DJ Evolve would have sued him civilly and obtained Judgment for more than Kshs. 2,000,000,000. But because…
