How Much Does It Cost to Study in the UK?
Fact-checked on
In this article
A UK study budget should cover tuition, living expenses, immigration costs and travel. Your university’s quotation and the rules for your visa application date matter more than an old national average.
Student Visa Maintenance Funds
As checked on 3 November 2026, GOV.UK lists:
| Study Location | Monthly Living Funds | Maximum Nine-Month Amount |
|---|---|---|
| London | £1,529 | £13,761 |
| Outside London | £1,171 | £10,539 |
These are visa maintenance figures, not full annual budgets. Course fees are additional, subject to the applicable rules and payments recorded on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Where the bank-funds rule applies, the money must normally be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days before the visa application. Different evidence provisions can apply to loans and sponsorship.
Other Costs to Include
Check tuition, accommodation deposits, food, transport, course equipment, visa charges, the immigration health surcharge and flights. Budget for the full course and any accompanying dependants you are permitted to bring.
Before Paying
- Obtain an official offer and fee schedule.
- Compare accommodation near your campus.
- Read the current visa financial rules and evidence guidance.
- Allow for exchange-rate and payment charges from Kenya.
Warning: Recheck the official figures immediately before applying; requirements can change. Do not treat the nine-month maintenance total as twelve months of living costs.
