An online listing is an invitation to check an item, not proof that the seller or goods are genuine. This guide updates the old OLX-focused advice using Jiji’s current buyer and seller safety guidance.

Before arranging a meeting

  1. Read the full listing and seller profile. Ask questions about condition, ownership and what is included.
  2. Compare the price with similar goods. A low price is a reason to investigate, rather than proof of a bargain.
  3. Search the listing photo using Google Lens. A reused image can help you ask better questions, but does not by itself prove fraud. A unique photo also does not prove the seller is genuine.
  4. Avoid advance payments for goods you have not inspected. Jiji’s safety guidance warns against prepayments, including claimed delivery payments.

At the meeting

Meet in a public place where you can inspect and test the item. For expensive goods, take someone you trust and allow enough time for checks. Confirm that the item and accessories match the agreement before paying.

Do not let the seller pressure you into paying because another buyer is supposedly waiting. If a transaction requires ownership or registration documents, verify those through the responsible official service.

If you are selling

Confirm payment through your own account or wallet before handing over goods. Do not rely on a screenshot or a message shown on the buyer’s phone. Do not share passwords, PINs or verification codes.

Report problems

Save the advert, profile, messages and transaction references. Use the platform’s reporting tools for suspicious listings. Report suspected theft or fraud to the appropriate authorities and payment provider as relevant.

Tip: A reverse-image search is one check among several. It cannot replace inspection, ownership checks or confirming payment.
