5 Career Paths to Research for Earning Potential in Kenya
Fact-checked on
In this article
There is no single reliable salary ranking that proves these are Kenya’s five best-paying careers. Pay depends on the role, employer, experience and qualifications. Use this list as a starting point for research, not a promise of income.
1. Aviation
Compare the particular occupation, such as pilot, aircraft maintenance or airline operations. Check training costs and the qualifications required before enrolling. A senior pilot’s earnings should not be presented as the likely starting pay for every aviation graduate.
2. Law
Investigate the route into the profession and the difference between salaried work and private practice. Fees received by a prominent advocate are not the same as the take-home salary of a newly qualified lawyer.
3. Medicine
Compare the role, training period and employer. Separate internship, general practice and specialist posts when looking at advertised pay. Check whether quoted amounts include allowances and whether they are gross or net.
4. Engineering
Research the engineering discipline and job requirements. Compare practical experience, professional registration and actual vacancies rather than assuming one salary applies to all engineers.
5. Journalism and media
Distinguish salaried reporting, broadcasting, production and freelance work. A celebrity presenter’s earnings are not a useful guide to typical entry-level income.
How to compare careers fairly
Use recent vacancies with published pay, relevant professional requirements and training costs. KNBS’s Economic Survey provides official employment and earnings data, but industry averages are not an occupation-by-occupation salary guarantee.
Tip: Compare the cost and duration of training, access to work and realistic early-career earnings before choosing a course. Look for evidence specific to the role and employer you are considering.
