How to Apply for a Birth Certificate Online in Kenya
Fact-checked on
You can start a birth certificate application through Civil Registration Services (CRS) on eCitizen. The service is no longer described as a Nairobi-only pilot. CRS also provides services through subcounty offices and Huduma centres.
Requirements
For a current birth, CRS lists the date and place of birth, the mother’s name and an Acknowledgement of Birth Notification (ABN). If the notification is missing, obtain evidence of its number from the place of birth. Have the parent’s or guardian’s identification available for the application.
A late registration, correction or birth abroad follows a different service and may need extra evidence. Select the service that matches your circumstances.
Application steps
- Open the official CRS eCitizen portal and sign in.
- Choose the relevant birth certificate service and read its checklist.
- Enter the birth details exactly as recorded and attach the requested documents.
- Review names, dates and identification numbers before submitting.
- Pay through the options generated by the official application. Keep the invoice and receipt.
- Follow the application’s instructions for document verification, submission and collection. Print the form and invoice if instructed.
Fees and follow-up
The State Department publishes a KSh 200 certificate fee for a current birth. Alterations and other services have separate charges. Check the invoice before paying; the old KSh 100 figure should not be used.
CRS assigns a Unique Personal Identifier, also called Maisha Namba, during birth registration. Follow the registrar’s instructions if a record needs correction.
Tip: Use the office specified for your application. Do not assume every applicant must take documents to the former Nairobi processing address.
