How to Confirm if a Tax Compliance Certificate Is Genuine
Fact-checked on
A supplier hands you a Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) to win a tender, or a job applicant attaches one to their CV. How do you know it is not a “River Road special”? The good news is that the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) lets anyone check a TCC online for free, in about a minute, without logging in.
KRA’s TCC checker runs the certificate number through the KRA database and shows you:
- The KRA PIN of the holder
- The name of the holder
- The status of the certificate
What you need
- The TCC certificate number (printed on the certificate)
- Internet access on a phone or computer
How to check a TCC on iTax
- Go to the KRA iTax portal at itax.kra.go.ke. You do not need to log in.
- Under iTax Online eServices, click TCC/Exemption/Excise License Checker.
- Enter the certificate number exactly as it appears on the TCC.
- Answer the simple security question on the page and submit.
- Compare the PIN, name and status shown with the details on the paper certificate.
You can also check a TCC using the KRA M-Service app.
If the name or PIN on the screen does not match the paper certificate, or the system says the certificate is not valid, do not accept it. A TCC is valid for 12 months only, so also check that it is still current.
The same iTax page has other free checkers, including a PIN Checker, withholding certificate checker and a Control Unit (ETR) checker. See our guide on how to check if a KRA PIN is genuine.
