How to Check if a KRA PIN Is Genuine
Fact-checked on
In this article
Use the official KRA iTax PIN Checker to check whether a Personal Identification Number is genuine. It is available for checking individual and non-individual taxpayer PINs.
KRA says a genuine PIN is generated by its Domestic Taxes Department system and is in active status. The checker provides only basic taxpayer details.
What you need
- The KRA PIN you want to verify.
- Internet access and a browser.
How to use the KRA PIN Checker
- Open the official iTax portal.
- Under iTax Online eServices, select PIN Checker. You can also open the direct checker link in the sources below.
- Enter the PIN exactly as it appears on the document you are checking.
- Complete the Security Stamp shown on the page and submit the request.
- Compare the returned taxpayer details with the person or organisation you are dealing with. Do not rely only on a certificate’s appearance.
If the PIN cannot be verified
Check for typing errors and retry. If the details do not match, ask the taxpayer to resolve the discrepancy with KRA before relying on the document. An unsuccessful check does not by itself establish why the PIN could not be verified.
PIN validity is not tax compliance
The PIN Checker verifies a PIN; it does not replace a Tax Compliance Certificate check. The iTax portal provides a separate TCC/Exemption/Excise License Checker for those documents.
Tip: Start from the official KRA portal rather than entering personal details into a third-party PIN-checking website. You do not need another taxpayer’s iTax password to use the public checker.
