How to Get a Logo for Your Business or Website
Fact-checked on
A useful logo should be readable, suit your business and work in the places you intend to use it. You can hire a designer or create your own, depending on your budget and skills.

What to Prepare
Write down your business name, intended audience, preferred style and the places the logo will appear. Gather examples to explain your preferences without copying another business’s artwork.
Steps to Get Your Logo
- Choose a design route. Compare designers using their actual portfolios, or use a design tool if you can create the artwork yourself. Inkscape is a free, open-source vector graphics editor.
- Agree on the work. For a hired designer, confirm the price, concepts, revisions, delivery date and ownership or licensing terms in writing.
- Test the design. Check it at a small size, in one colour and against the backgrounds you use.
- Request useful files. Ask for an editable original and exports suitable for your website and print needs. An SVG is a common vector format.
- Check rights. Confirm permissions for fonts, icons and other elements before using them commercially.
Warning: A template or stock icon may also be available to other users. Canva’s guidance explains why stock library content can be unsuitable for a trademark. Seek appropriate advice before registering a mark.
Tip: Keep the approved files and written rights agreement somewhere you can find them when changing printers or website providers.
