How to Replace a Lost Kenyan Passport
Fact-checked on
Apply to replace a lost Kenyan passport through the Directorate of Immigration Services on eCitizen. Report the loss and prepare the evidence required for a lost-passport application; an ordinary renewal checklist is not enough.
Requirements
Have your Kenyan identification details, a police report or abstract concerning the loss, a sworn affidavit explaining the circumstances, and a copy of the lost passport if available. Prepare the application and payment records generated by eCitizen. Immigration or your Kenyan mission may request further documents for your circumstances, including a child applicant.
Steps
- Report the loss to the police and keep the report. If abroad, check the nearest Kenyan mission’s instructions as well.
- Sign in to the official Immigration eCitizen portal and choose the lost-passport replacement service.
- Enter your details carefully, explain the loss and upload the requested evidence. Read the checklist generated for your application before submitting.
- Pay using the options provided by eCitizen and save the invoice and receipt. Do not use the old banker’s-cheque instructions.
- Book the required appointment. Take the original documents and printed application records specified in the checklist for verification and biometric capture.
- Follow progress and collection instructions through your application. Keep the collection documents safe.
Fees and urgent travel
Immigration’s published fees page lists KSh 20,050 for a lost or mutilated passport. Check the current invoice before paying, particularly if applying through a mission abroad.
Replacement processing is different from obtaining an emergency travel document. If you are stranded abroad, ask your Kenyan mission which document is appropriate for your journey. Do not assume a replacement will be issued before an existing booking.
Tip: Store a secure copy of your passport separately from the original. It can help identify the lost document, but does not replace a valid passport for travel.
