How to Send Money to Kenya Online Through M-PESA
Fact-checked on
In this article
You can send money from abroad to an eligible Kenyan M-PESA wallet using a transfer service that supports this destination. Wise documents this route. Availability still depends on where you are sending from and the payment method offered to you.
What you need
- An account with a provider that supports your sending country and M-PESA payouts in Kenya.
- Any identity documents requested by that provider.
- The recipient’s full name and registered M-PESA phone number.
- A supported way to pay for the transfer.
Steps
- Open the provider’s official website or app. With Wise, choose Kenya and KES as the receiving currency, then select M-PESA when it is offered.
- Enter the recipient’s name and phone number in the format requested. Wise specifies Kenya’s country code, 254.
- Enter the amount and compare the total you will pay with the Kenyan shillings the recipient will receive. Check the exchange rate, fees and estimated arrival time together.
- Review every recipient detail before paying. Complete any verification requested through the official service.
- Save the transfer reference and track the transfer in your account. If it fails or is delayed, contact the sending provider using that reference.
What about Skrill?
Skrill documents mobile-wallet transfers and withdrawals, but the options depend on the account and destination. Its general instructions do not establish that every user can send to a Kenyan M-PESA wallet. Check whether Kenya and M-PESA are actually offered before depositing money for that purpose.
Withdrawing your own Skrill balance to a personal mobile wallet is a separate operation from sending a remittance to someone else. Skrill requires the personal wallet to be in your own name.
Tip: Compare the final KES payout for the same total payment. A low advertised transfer fee does not necessarily mean the best overall exchange rate.
