IRA Licensing: Insurance Loss Adjuster Requirements in Kenya
Fact-checked on
In this article
An insurance loss adjuster assesses insured losses. Apply for the loss-adjuster category rather than assuming another insurance service-provider licence covers the work. Section 150 of the Insurance Act requires the appropriate licence before carrying on the regulated business.
Principal-officer requirements
IRA’s published checklist specifies a qualification in loss adjustment from a recognised institution; and at least five years’ experience in loss adjustment. Prepare evidence of the qualifications and relevant experience; describe the actual work performed in loss adjustment.
Business documents and fee
Prepare the prescribed application and appendices, business-registration documents and principal-officer details. The application must support the business’s viability, professional standards and, for a company, financial standing. Consult the current IRA checklist for the complete category-specific documents and certification requirements.
IRA requires the proposed principal officer’s certificate of good conduct. The published registration fee is KSh 3,000; check the official invoice before payment.
Application steps
- Open IRA’s online portal and sign in through eCitizen. Complete your profile if this is your first login.
- Select the relevant insurance loss adjuster service, not a neighbouring licensing category.
- Fill in the application and upload the required evidence. Resolve any uncertainty about a qualification or exemption with IRA.
- Submit and use the portal’s PesaFlow payment route for the generated invoice.
- Monitor the dashboard for queries, payment status and the licensing decision. Supply any additional documents requested.
- Obtain and check the issued licence before starting the regulated business. Confirm subsequent renewal requirements with IRA.
Tip: Business-name registration, payment of a fee and submission of an application do not by themselves authorise insurance work. Check the licence category and validity.
