Motor insurance assessors examine vehicle damage and provide assessments for insurance purposes. To carry on this regulated business in Kenya, apply for the appropriate Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) licence under the Insurance Act.

Principal-officer requirements

IRA’s published motor-assessor checklist requires the proposed principal officer to have:

  • Passed, or been exempted from, the Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in insurance examination, with a pass in Motor Insurance. The examination is offered by the College of Insurance.
  • An engineering qualification of at least diploma level.
  • At least five years’ working experience in motor assessment.

Prepare evidence of the qualifications and relevant work. A general interest in cars or an unrelated insurance qualification does not establish eligibility.

Business documents and fee

The current checklist also requires business-registration evidence, the principal officer’s CV and certificate of good conduct. The principal officer must be a partner for a partnership or a shareholder for a corporate entity. The applicant must support business viability, professional standards and, for a company, sound financial standing. Check the full IRA checklist for certification and business-name requirements.

IRA publishes a KSh 3,000 registration fee. Use the invoice generated through the official application route.

How to apply

  1. Open IRA’s online portal and sign in through eCitizen.
  2. Complete your profile and select the motor-assessor licensing service.
  3. Fill in the prescribed application and upload the requested documents and appendices.
  4. Submit and pay through the portal’s PesaFlow route.
  5. Track the application and respond to any request for further information.
  6. Check the category and validity of the issued licence before commencing regulated work.

Tip: Business registration and paying an application fee are not substitutes for an issued IRA licence. Ask IRA about uncertain qualification exemptions before relying on them.
