You typed the wrong SIM PIN three times and now your phone is asking for a “PUK”. Don’t panic, and please don’t start guessing. Your Airtel line, your Airtel Money and your number are all still there. You just need the right code to unlock the SIM, and Airtel gives it to you free.

What Is a PUK Code?

The PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) is an 8-digit code tied to your SIM card. Your phone asks for it after the SIM PIN has been entered wrongly too many times (usually three). Once you enter the correct PUK, you get to set a new SIM PIN and the line works again.

You only get a limited number of PUK attempts (on most SIM cards, 10). If you enter a wrong PUK too many times, the SIM is blocked for good and you will need a SIM replacement. Get the real code first, then type it in carefully.

What You Need

  • The phone number of the locked Airtel line.
  • The ID or passport number used to register that line.
  • Another Airtel line (a friend’s or family member’s phone works), or any phone to call customer care.

Option 1: Get Your PUK on *100# From Another Airtel Line

  1. On another Airtel line, dial *100#.
  2. Choose the Get PUK option from the menu.
  3. Select that you want the PUK for another number, then enter the locked Airtel number.
  4. Enter the ID or passport number the locked line is registered with.
  5. Confirm. Airtel sends the PUK by SMS.

Menu numbers on *100# change from time to time, so read the options on screen and pick “Get PUK” rather than following an old option number.

Option 2: Call Airtel Customer Care

  • From an Airtel prepaid line: call 100.
  • From another network or from abroad: call 0733 100 100 (+254 733 100 100).
  • Postpaid customers: call 200 from an Airtel line.

The agent will ask questions to confirm you own the line (such as your ID number) before giving you the PUK.

Option 3: Check Your SIM Pack or Visit an Airtel Shop

The PUK is printed on the card holder your SIM came in, often under a scratch panel. If you still have it, use that. If not, take your original national ID or passport to any Airtel shop and ask for help. See our list of Airtel Kenya shops.

How to Enter the PUK and Set a New PIN

  1. When your phone shows “SIM locked” or “Enter PUK”, type the 8-digit PUK you received.
  2. Enter a new 4–8 digit SIM PIN.
  3. Enter the new PIN again to confirm.
  4. Your SIM unlocks and the network comes back.

On many phones you can also unlock straight from the dialler by typing **05*PUK*NewPIN*NewPIN# (replace PUK and NewPIN with your numbers). This is a standard SIM command, not an Airtel code, so use the on-screen prompt if it does not work on your phone.

Tips and Warnings

  • Never share your PUK, Airtel Money PIN or OTP with anyone who calls you. Airtel says its staff will not ask for your PIN or OTP.
  • Don’t fall for “unlock SIM without PUK” apps or websites. There is no safe shortcut, and some are scams.
  • If you no longer have the SIM or it is permanently blocked, take your ID to an Airtel shop for a SIM replacement. You keep the same number.
  • Pick a SIM PIN you will remember, or turn off the SIM PIN lock in your phone’s security settings if you don’t need it.
