How to Use Messenger Without Browsing the Facebook Feed
Fact-checked on
In this article
You can use the official Messenger mobile app to chat without browsing the Facebook feed. Messenger remains part of Meta’s services; using a separate app does not make it independent of Meta.
What you need
A supported phone, an internet connection and access to your Messenger account. Your sign-in options depend on the account and the service available to you.
Steps
- Find Messenger in your phone’s official app store. Check that the publisher is Meta Platforms, Inc.
- Install or update the app.
- Open it and sign in using the official sign-in flow for your account.
- Complete any account or chat-history recovery steps shown.
- Choose the person or conversation and send your message. The app also supports calls and sharing photos.
On a computer
The old article’s standalone Messenger.com recommendation is no longer a reliable current instruction. Use Meta’s current Messenger help for the supported web route; Facebook’s messaging page is facebook.com/messages. The mobile app is the practical option if your goal is to avoid opening the Facebook website.
Tip: Check the app’s notification settings if you want messages without constant interruptions. A separate messaging app can still include other social features.
Warning: Never enter your password or chat-recovery PIN into a third-party site claiming it can restore your Messenger conversations.
