How to Find County Budget and Spending Data in Kenya
Fact-checked on
In this article
To find out how a Kenyan county budgets and spends public money, use current official budget documents and implementation reports. A budget allocation, money received and actual expenditure are different figures.
Useful official sources
- National Treasury’s Bajeti Yetu: provides national and county budget documents and analysis.
- Office of the Controller of Budget: publishes county budget implementation review reports.
- Parliament’s digital repository: holds official reports, including county budget implementation reviews.
- Your county government’s website: check approved budgets and implementation documents for the period concerned.
How to check spending
- Select the county and financial year.
- Find the approved budget and note any supplementary changes.
- Open the implementation report for the same period.
- Separate approved allocations, receipts, expenditure and pending bills where reported.
- Compare like periods: a quarterly report is not a full-year result.
- Keep the document title, publication date and page or table number when quoting a figure.
Reading the results
A project appearing in a budget does not prove that it was completed. Spending figures also do not by themselves establish the quality of work. Look for the relevant project reports and audit evidence when assessing delivery.
Tip: This guide replaces the 2017 announcement about a five-county pilot portal. Use the current official document sources below rather than assuming the old portal is a complete or up-to-date spending record.
