How Much Does It Cost to Study in Canada?
Fact-checked on
The cost of studying in Canada depends on your course, institution, province and household. Tuition is separate from living expenses and travel.
Use Canadian dollars when comparing quotations, then allow for conversion and payment charges when budgeting from Kenya.
Proof of Living Funds
For study permit applications made on or after 1 September 2026, IRCC lists CAN$23,448 a year for one person, outside Quebec. This excludes tuition and transportation. Larger accompanying households need more funds.
Quebec has separate financial requirements. Check the rules for your application date and destination before submitting documents.
Other Costs to Check
- Tuition and compulsory institution fees.
- Accommodation, deposits, food, utilities and transport.
- Health insurance and any required medical examination.
- Study permit, biometrics and document costs where applicable.
- Flights, clothing, equipment and course materials.
Prepare Your Budget
- Obtain the institution’s current international tuition quotation.
- Research accommodation and everyday costs in the actual study location.
- Add travel, insurance and application expenses.
- Check IRCC’s acceptable financial evidence and any country-specific instructions.
- Plan how you will fund the whole programme, not just the first payment.
Warning: IRCC requires sufficient funds without relying on work in Canada. Proof-of-funds figures are not a guarantee that your actual living costs will be that low.
