Cheque discounting can let an approved customer access part of a cheque’s value before it clears. It is an advance, not proof that the cheque has been paid. Same-day access is not guaranteed: the bank must first approve the request and complete its checks.

What you need

Requirements depend on the lender. Family Bank publicly lists a cheque-discounting service for existing customers. Its published conditions include:

  • An account that has been reasonably active for at least six months.
  • A cheque drawn on a reputable institution with no record of previous unpaid cheques from that drawer.
  • A history of receiving cheques from the same drawer.
  • Confirmation with the drawer and/or the drawer’s bank.

Family Bank says personal cheques, related-entity cheques and foreign-currency cheques do not qualify for its product. These are that bank’s conditions, not universal rules for every lender.

How to request cheque discounting

  1. Contact your bank before relying on the money. Ask whether it offers cheque discounting and whether your cheque qualifies.
  2. Ask what documents and verification are needed, and whether the bank can make a decision that day.
  3. Deposit the cheque and apply as directed by the bank.
  4. Obtain a written quotation showing the advance, interest, fees, repayment terms and what happens if the cheque is unpaid.
  5. Read and accept the terms only if you understand the total cost. Wait for approval and confirmation that the funds are available.

How much can you receive?

Family Bank states that it discounts eligible cheques up to a maximum of 80% of their value. That is a product limit, not a promise that every applicant receives 80% or gets paid on the same day.

There is no verified universal 3–10% fee for Kenyan banks. Ask for a current quotation rather than relying on an old percentage.

What if the cheque bounces?

Family Bank describes the advance as being “with recourse to the customer”. This means you remain responsible under the lending agreement if the cheque is not paid.

Warning: Treat cheque discounting as borrowing. Do not hand a cheque or sensitive banking documents to an unverified broker promising instant cash.
