How to Request an M-PESA Transaction Reversal
Fact-checked on
In this article
Act promptly if you send M-PESA money incorrectly. A reversal request asks Safaricom to investigate the payment; it does not guarantee that the money will be returned.
What you need
Keep the original confirmation SMS, transaction code, amount, time and the number or business you paid. Do not delete the message while following up.
Money sent to the wrong person
- Check the original confirmation to establish what happened.
- Forward the original M-PESA confirmation SMS to 456 to request a reversal. Safaricom has documented this SMS reversal channel in its sustainability reporting.
- Read the response and follow the instructions from the service. Keep the acknowledgement and reference.
- If the request cannot be completed, use Safaricom’s official M-PESA support channel. Provide the transaction details privately through that channel.
- Confirm the result in your wallet and transaction messages before treating the payment as refunded.
Wrong business payment or airtime purchase
A payment to a business and an accidental airtime purchase may need different handling from a person-to-person transfer. Open Safaricom’s official reversal guidance or contact its support team with the original confirmation and explain the transaction type. For a business payment, also contact the receiving business through independently verified details.
Do not assume unused airtime, a wrong Paybill payment and money sent to another person all follow one identical automatic process. Check the instructions for the transaction type before requesting a refund.
Warning: Never post your full transaction message publicly or share a PIN or verification code. A caller’s promise to reverse a payment is not evidence that a reversal has occurred.
