Nairobi is the starting point for most Kenyan safaris, so it is no surprise the city is packed with tour companies. Hundreds of them. Sadly, not every “safari company” with a nice website is real, and every peak season some travellers lose their deposits to fake operators.
Below is a short list of established Nairobi safari companies that are current members of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO), with contacts as listed in KATO’s members directory. Always check the operator’s licence before you pay (see the steps further down).

How to Check a Safari Company Before You Pay
- Check the licence. Every tour operator in Kenya must hold a licence from the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA), renewed every year. Ask for the licence number and confirm it is current on the TRA licence verification page.
- Check the business registration. Ask for the registered company name and confirm it on the Business Registration Service through eCitizen.
- Check KATO membership. Membership is optional, but KATO members agree to a code of conduct. If a company says it is a member, its name should appear in the KATO directory.
- Get it in writing. Ask for an itemised quote that shows park fees, accommodation, transport and what is not included, and get a written confirmation before you pay a deposit.
Be careful with “too good to be true” deals advertised only on social media, operators who will not give a physical office, and requests to send the full amount to a personal M-PESA number.
