How to Register a Business Name Online in Kenya
Fact-checked on
In this article
Business name registration is handled by the Business Registration Service (BRS) through eCitizen. It is different from incorporating a limited company.
BRS explains that a business name is not a separate legal entity.
What You Need
Have the proposed names, proprietor or partner identity details, KRA PIN information, contacts and business particulars ready. The application determines the evidence needed for your circumstances.
Registration Steps
- Sign in through the official BRS eCitizen portal.
- Select Companies Registry Services, then Make Application.
- Choose Registration of a Business Name.
- Enter preferred names in priority order. BRS’s published guide requests at least three and no more than five names.
- Complete the business and proprietor information accurately.
- Download the generated form, sign it and upload it as instructed.
- Submit and pay using the official instructions generated for your application.
- Track the application and download the certificate once approved.
Fee
BRS’s fee schedule lists KSh 950 for registration of a business name. Confirm the amount and any separately displayed charges on your official invoice before paying. The old instructions for separate KSh 150 name searches and KSh 50 registration payments should not be followed.
Warning: Do not reuse an old paybill or payment reference. Use the instructions attached to your own application.
Tip: Registration does not replace other licences, permits or tax obligations that may apply to the business.
