MTN Rwanda lists Kenya among its outbound remittance destinations. Its published international-transfer shortcut is *182*1*3#, replacing the old *830# instruction in this article.

What you need

Have a registered and usable MTN MoMo wallet, enough funds for the transfer and fee, and the recipient’s correct name and Kenyan mobile-wallet details. If the recipient uses M-PESA, confirm that Safaricom/M-PESA is offered in the current Kenya destination flow before proceeding.

Send the money

  1. Dial *182*1*3# from your MTN Rwanda line.
  2. Select Kenya and follow the international-transfer prompts.
  3. Choose the recipient service actually offered. Do not substitute another Kenyan wallet for M-PESA or assume every number is supported.
  4. Enter the recipient details and amount in the format requested by the service.
  5. Review the displayed recipient, fee, exchange quote and amount to be received. Cancel if any detail is wrong or unclear.
  6. Authorise using your MoMo PIN and keep the transaction reference.
  7. Ask the recipient to check their own wallet and confirmation, rather than relying only on a screenshot from the sender.

Charges and unsuccessful transfers

MTN publishes outbound remittance tariffs, but the applicable quote and supported payout route should be checked before each transfer. There is no verified basis for retaining the old claim that the exchange rate always updates at midnight.

If M-PESA is not offered, ask MTN about the supported Kenya payout options. For a pending or unsuccessful transaction, use official support with the reference before sending again.

Tip: Never share your MoMo or M-PESA PIN with a recipient, agent or person claiming to resolve a transfer.
