For current travel planning, start with Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system and its eligibility rules. The old list of single-entry, transit and multiple-journey visa fees is not a current application guide.

An eTA is permission to travel under the applicable rules. It does not guarantee admission, authorise every activity in Kenya or replace a work permit.

Which route applies?

Your situation What to check
Tourism, a family visit or a business visit Check eTA eligibility for your nationality, passport type and travel circumstances
An exempt traveller Confirm the exact exemption and permitted period; exemption from an application and exemption from a fee are different
Diplomatic or official travel Use the official portal’s route for the passport or travel document and purpose concerned
Employment, study, research or long-term residence Check the appropriate Immigration permit, pass or residence service in addition to entry arrangements
Transit Check whether you remain within the transit area or enter Kenya, and apply the official rules to that itinerary

The current official exemption guidance names certain nationality, residence and document categories, with conditions and time limits. Do not assume a general statement that Kenya is “visa-free” removes every pre-travel requirement.

Check and apply

  1. Open etakenya.go.ke and use its eligibility and application information.
  2. Enter the actual nationality, passport type and itinerary. Check exemptions before paying.
  3. If an application is required, prepare the documents requested for your travel purpose and submit through the official portal.
  4. Review the authorisation and its conditions when issued. Keep the relevant travel documents available for the journey.
  5. For a work permit, student/dependant or other pass, use Immigration’s official guidance and eFNS service. Check the permission needed before undertaking the activity.

Tip: Check again before booking and departure. An approved travel authorisation, permission to stay and permission to work are separate questions.
