How to Replace a Lost Kenyan National ID Card
Fact-checked on
If your Kenyan national ID or Maisha Card is lost, apply for a duplicate through the National Registration Bureau (NRB). You can seek assistance at a registration office or Huduma centre.
Requirements and fee
NRB lists a police abstract or a letter from an administrator for duplicate registration. Report a stolen or lost card to the police and keep the abstract. Also take your ID number or a copy of the card if available.
The State Department publishes a KSh 1,050 duplicate-card fee, payable through eCitizen. Check the official invoice before payment. The old KSh 20 replacement fee is obsolete.
Steps
- Obtain evidence of the loss and gather any copy or record of your ID number.
- Open the NRB eCitizen service or visit a registration office or Huduma centre for assistance.
- Choose Issuance of Duplicate Identity Card and complete the required application.
- Provide the supporting documents and pay through the official eCitizen payment instructions.
- Attend any required verification or biometric capture. Keep your acknowledgement or waiting card and receipt.
- Follow up with the office handling the application and collect the card as instructed.
Following up
Use the application reference and the registration station where you applied. A fixed two-week turnaround should not be assumed. For related guidance, see checking your Kenyan ID application status.
Warning: Do not give a runner your eCitizen password, one-time code or payment PIN. Identity verification may require your personal attendance.
