Are you a member of a political party? Don’t answer too fast. Over the years, many Kenyans have found themselves registered in parties they never joined, often using ID details collected without their knowledge.

The good news: you can check your party membership in a minute and leave a party you never joined, for free or almost free. Here is how.

The ORPP says you can use its resignation service if you were registered by mistake or without your consent:

  1. Dial *509# and choose the resignation option, or
  2. Use the online resignation service or eCitizen.
  3. The Registrar then removes your name from that party’s register.

For help, contact the ORPP on +254 20 4022000, call/SMS/WhatsApp 0118 967 567, or email info@orpp.or.ke.

Since the Data Protection Act, 2019, a party must get your consent before it adds you. Under the ORPP process, you only become a member after the Registrar verifies the record and you give consent.

If you are an MP or MCA, resigning has extra steps (you must also notify the Clerk of your House or County Assembly). Get advice before you act.
