How to Choose a Business Location in Kenya
Fact-checked on
In this article
The right location depends on how your business reaches customers and operates. A busy address is useful only if it suits the work and the cost is sustainable.

Factors to Compare
- Customers. Check where your intended buyers live, work or shop. Observe the site at the times your business would operate rather than relying on one visit.
- Total cost. Compare rent, deposit, service charges, utilities, fitting out, security and moving costs. Ask which expenses are included in the quotation.
- Access. Consider public transport, deliveries, parking and accessibility for customers and staff.
- Space and facilities. Check layout, storage, water, power, ventilation and any specialist requirements.
- Surroundings. Look at complementary businesses, competitors and the practical effect of noise or congestion.
- Permissions and lease terms. Before paying, confirm the intended activity is permitted and ask the relevant Kenyan authorities about licences or approvals.
Before You Commit
Compare several sites using the same checklist. Ask for written terms and have a suitable professional review any commitment you do not understand. Consider whether the space can still work if sales take longer than expected.
Tip: A business serving clients remotely may value reliable infrastructure and lower costs more than a premium walk-in address.
Warning: General overseas business-location guidance is a planning aid, not confirmation that Kenyan planning, safety or licensing requirements have been met.
